Installation Guide

DECKfon 17T low profile, composite overlay boards are designed toimprove the acoustic performance of an existing structural timber floor. The treatment combines a tongue & groove MDF floorboard with a recycled, low resonance, flexible resilient foam.

DECKfon 17T

Products & Tools

Required CELLECTA products for system

  • DECKfon 17T boards

  • fon Adhesive

  • YELOfon FS15 Flanking strip

Required tools for installation

  • Tape measure

  • Hand saw or power circular saw

  • M class extraction system

  • PPF3 face mask

  • PPE as site requirements

Sub-Floor Preparation

  • Prior to installing the DECKfon 17T, ensure that the substrate is level and structurally sound.

  • Any loose floorboards should be secured to the joists with suitable fixings.

  • Clean the floors of any building debris to allow the boards to lay flat.

  • Fill all gaps and potential air paths in the floor deck with a suitable flexible caulking mastic.

Pre-Installation

Pre-Installation

  • Before commencing installation, take time to familiarise yourself with the products and these instructions.

Installation

Install left to right

  • First measure the room and ensure that no cut board will have any dimension less than 200mm.

  • Depending on the wall treatment it may be necessary to first remove the tongue of the short-edge from the DECKfon 17T. See Image 001

  • Start laying the 17T in the far-left hand corner of the room. Install with the foam side down. Placing the groove of the long-edge against the wall. See fig 002

Pack the board away from wall

  • The packers or shims should be placed at regular intervals between the wall and the board allowing for a minimum 10mm expansion gap.

  • Allow 10mm for floors with dimensions under 10 metres and if the dimensions exceed 10 meters allow 2mm per metre. See Image 003

TOP TIP Do not use the YELOfon FS/ES in place of packers as this is a compressible material.

Gluing the interlocking joints

  • Run 5mm beads of Cellecta fon Adhesive along the meeting tongue and groove of the DECKfon 17T and interlock. Ensure the joints are flush and there are no gaps between the boards. See Image 004

Cutting the DECKfon 17T

  • At wall abutments, measure the gap from the laid DECKfon 17T to the wall allowing for an expansion gap. See fig 5

  • Using a hand or circular saw cut the 17T to the required length. Ensure suitable PPE is used when cutting the boards in accordance with the Safety Data Sheet, a copy of which can be supplied upon request.

Health & Safety

  • When using a circular power saw use extraction vacuum equipment that meets at least the dust class M (medium hazard) classification for cleaning.

  • A moulded face mask with a minimum assigned protection factor of 20 (FFP3) will be required for most machining operations and for short duration dusty tasks such as emptying LEV dust collectors. See Image 006

  • If RPE is required for high work rate activities or extended wear times, then powered RPE may be more suitable.

  • Above Health & Safety advise from Health and Safety Executive (HSE): (CIS69) Controlling construction dust with on-tool extraction. More information available at www.hse-gov.uk

Installing DECKfon 17T

  • Apply the fon Adhesive to the tongue & groove and insert to complete the first row. Ensure there are no gaps between the joints of the board. Install the packers to maintain perimeter expansion gap.

  • Run the fon Adhesive along the exposed long tongue of the first row. If the off-cut of 17T is a suitable size use it to begin the next row. Where possible, it is advised that any off cut should be no less than 200mm in width, planning the layout in advance can help minimise small offcuts. See fig 7

  • Install the remainder of the DECKfon 17T in a brick bond formation ensuring all boards are glued and tightly interlocked. See fig 008

  • Ensure the perimeter expansion gap is maintained using shims or packers. See fig 009

  • It is important that none of the boards are in contact with any walls or door treatments as this can result in acoustic failure.

Flanking strip

  • Remove the packing shims from around the 17T and install YELOfon FS15 flanking strip around all perimeters to isolate the floor treatment and stop flanking transmission.                                                            See fig 010

  • Any soil pipes or services that penetrate the 17T should be isolated using the FS15 flanking strip.

  • All plasterboard, as well as the skirting boards must be isolated from the 17T by the flanking strip.

  • Once the 17T floor installation is complete, the skirting board can be installed over the FS15, with any excess trimmed back using a knife prior to the installation of the floor finishes. See fig 011

Movement Joints

  • Intermediate movement joints (min. 10mm) should be incorporated for floors more than 10m long.

  • DECKfon 17T can be installed through doorways into other rooms if the overall dimensions don’t exceed a 10mtr run. The floor treatment isolation must continue to all perimeters. A convenient location to place movement joints is the doorway, where an expansion gap can be left between rooms. The gap in the floor treatment can be filled with a flexible mastic or sealant and a suitable cover strip installed to bridge the gap. See fig 012

Internal partitions

  • Both load bearing walls and non-load bearing partitions must be built off the structural floor and not the DECKfon 17T. All walls and partitions must then be isolated from the acoustic treatment with flanking strip. See fig 013

Fixing into DECKfon 17T

  • DECKfon 17T is a floating floor treatment and therefore must not be mechanically fixed to the structural floor. Any mechanical fixings penetrating the 17T may result in acoustic failure. So, ensure all fixing into the MDF surface penetrate no more than 8mm into the board. See fig 014

Before installing floor finish

  • Allow the fon Adhesive to fully cure for a minimum of 48 hours prior to trafficking the floor or installing floor finishes.

Sanitary wear & Kitchen units

  • It is recommended that sanitary ware and kitchen units are built off the structural floor with the 17T isolated by 5mm from the legs or units. The sanitary wear & kitchen units should not touch the 17T.

  • Install any decorative panels such as plinths or bath surrounds to produce a neat finish. Seal any gaps with a flexible mastic. See fig 015

  • If required raise the height of the sanitary wear or units to suit the finished height of the acoustic flooring and selected floor finish. See fig 016

Floor Finish

Floor Finishes

  • All floor finishes should be installed in line with the manufacturer’s official guidance and the relevant British Standards.

  • When installing sensitive floor finishes such as LVT, vinyl, and tiled finishes over DECKfon 17T consideration to the natural thermal expansion and contraction of chipboard-based products should be given. The DECKfon 17T may require stabilization with a minimum 6mm fabricated underlay typically, flooring grade plywood. A decoupling layer may also be required if tiling. Cellecta recommend consulting with the floor finishes manufacturer or installer for advice on floor preparation and for more information, please contact Cellecta technical department or download a copy of our comprehensive Floor Finishing Guide from our website.
